Giveaways

Your Chance to WIN a Surf Lesson in Southern California!

Alright, fellow adventurers. Over the past few month’s you’ve put up with my zany pageant adventures, social media Tourism Australia campaign, and radical mood swings (well I mean, that’s always, but regardless…).

Your support through all of these endeavors has meant the world to me. And I feel it’s high time I returned the favor.

SO, as my way of saying thanks (you know, besides actually saying thanks), I’m holding a special summertime giveaway!

Summer is one of my favorite seasons and I know you’re all out taking advantage of the great weather and making once-in-a-lifetime memories. And since I’m all about prolonging the fun, I’m giving one lucky reader a chance to have an Endless Summer…

Wavehuggers student

Ever wanted to ride the waves? Learn how to hang ten and thrash the gnar? Live in a Beach Boys’ song for a day?

You’ve read all about my surfing adventures and now I’m PUMPED to bring you the opportunity to shred with one of the coolest chicks on the West Coast.

Helina 2- web size

Helina Beck, pro-surfer Holly Beck’s little sister, has started her own surf school called Wavehuggers.

This environmentally friendly surf school teaches you not only how to catch waves, but also the all-too-often skipped surf etiquette. This means that later you’ll be able to paddle out on your own and actually KNOW what you’re doing… How rad is that?.

One lucky winner and a pal will get the chance to take a FREE private surf lesson with Helina. Whether you’re a beginner looking to stand up on your first wave, or you’re a skilled shredder looking to get some pointers, this experience is for you!

The chosen winner will have six months to redeem their prize after the announcement on August 16th, 2013.

Your Surf Lesson Will Include:
>A two-hour private surf session with Helina and a pal at one of these available Southern California beach locations.
>Surfboards and wetsuits to use during your session.
>Permission to take your own videos and photos of the experience.

This Surf Adventure is valued at $198.00!

Thank you, Andy! I’m glad you like it.

I’m guessing your a big fan of craft beer? Man, I wish I liked the taste better… Once went to a beer tasting and didn’t abhor one of the thirteen I tried. Or something ridiculous like that…

Really? That’s super awesome! And never say never!

I agree though. I’m a little terrified of paddling out on my own. As long as I’m with a more experienced surfer I’m okay, but you’d never seen me dawn patrolling by myself, haha!

Surf lessons would be amazing! More amazed would be the people on the beach watching me, a middle-aged woman with a teeny fear of the water trying to stand on a surfboard. A good time would be had by all, I’ll tell you that. :) Pick me and I promise itll be fun.

Meanwhile, head to Huntington Beach, California if you get the chance. I hear that’s where the real waves are.

Haha! I LOVE it, Juliann! You’d have a blast. One of the girls that I attended surf camp with had only recently learned how to swim. She decided to challenge herself by then going to a surf camp because it only seemed logical. I’m sure you would inspire a BUNCH of people with your story just like her. =)

And yes! Huntington does have some good waves. =)

Thanks so much! Yeah, she really is. She totally fixed my pop-up in a matter of five minutes. Plus, she’s just super fun to hang with as well. =) Have you ever tried surfing?

Me? I can barely swim! I have this weird relationship with water. I’ll tube on it for hours; My first Kayak trip was ten miles in class two and three rapids; I’ve been on various boats and ships over deep blue waters; and have no worries about canoeing in a crowded gator lake; but I rarely swim. Odd, huh?

Incredibly so! But also very fascinating! I wonder if there’s some deep-seeded psychological reason behind it.

Or, I suppose it could be you just don’t like getting wet, haha!

Shaka Brah! Even though I live in LA, I’ve only tried surfing once in high school – it’s been TOO LONG! A coastal city I suggest you visit next is Monterey Bay – not sure if you’ve been there or not – but it is one of the most beautiful coastlines in California! If you do go, I’ll definitely meet you up there :) and show you around.

Heck YES you need to try surfing again! I tried it a few times in high school also, but it took me going to Nicaragua to get really excited about it. =)

And thank you so much for the suggestion! I would love to meet up. I’ll be heading down to your area end of next month so we’ll have to do it! Best of luck in the contest!

I just love you and your amazing blog! I may be going against the grain of your usual escapades by suggesting an in-country city, but I would love to see you go to Cannon Beach, Oregon. It seems so relaxing, yet so liberating. Nothing beats the whole nature captivating aspect of it and getting away from the city for a while! Love ya and would love the opportunity of meeting one of the great Beck girls and attempt surfing! (Hey, if anyone could teach me, it would be her right?) Especially after all of your great talk of them! :)

Thanks so much, Jennifer! And that’s a great suggestion! I know; I tend to overlook the in-country experiences, but there are SO many great ones! I need to start giving them more attention.

And of course they would be the ones to teach you! I’m pretty sure they’re the best in all the world, but I may just be a little bias. ;)

Bolinas California! Time to think outside the box. Bolinas is a tiny beach town northwest of San Francisco. The Bolinas residents are an oddball collection of artists, surfers, and hippies, who have torn down all route 1 signs pointing to their town! Just getting there is an adventure, but the real treasure is in Bolinas bay.

Besides protected tide pools, Bolinas bay hosts one of the largest white shark populations in the world. Feeding on seal colonies, and migrating to and from the Farallones marine sanctuary, white sharks hang out in Bolinas year round. You can also see whales passing through at certain times, including orca pods, which hunt and feed on the sharks. It’s apex predator vs apex predator I tell you, all in the shadow of an art colony!

Forget your Malibus and your Miamis. Traveling to Bolinas is a legit adventure. It’s tough enough to be an accomplishment, hosts an amazing natural wonder, and is off the track – so it will raise eyebrows. Three cheers for Bolinas!
